This April, we showcased a local Kootenay explorer, Drew Leiterman, based in Cranbrook, BC. Drew is an avid rock climber and has an incredible eye behind the lens to capture his adventures. Check out his Instagram Feed to see more of his work!
#1. If you could choose one spot in the Kootenays that make you the happiest, where would it be? Well, hands down I’m happiest when I’m rock climbing. There are so many placed to climb in the Kootenays it’s impossible to name just one. A few that come to mind are, the Bugaboos, Valhallas, Lakit Lake and Perry Creek. But, really anywhere with exposed, climbable rock makes me very happy.
The iconic Fisher Peak.
#2. How does exploring our Kootenay backcountry inspire you? Exploring the Kootenay backcountry has given me skills and fitness to climb at the level I want to. Whether it’s bagging tall peaks, sport climbing at the crag, or even having sessions at the local climbing gym (not the backcountry), there is always something to be stoked about.

#3. Name your ‘Top 3 Things’ you love about the Kootenays.
#1. Lakit Lake in the Spring.
#2. The rest of the day in the Bugaboos after hiking up with way too much food and gear, along with the planning and prep for the following day of climbing.
#3. Drinking water from alpine creeks.

#4. Who is your favourite outdoor companion? Anyone who can give me a soft catch when I fall rock climbing.

#5. Describe your perfect day in the Kootenays. The perfect day would go like this; Wake up and watch the sunrise over the Rockies with a few coffees, spend the whole day climbing, and hit up the hot springs in the evening. If I could fit in a turkey dinner in there somewhere then it would be unforgettable.
