Seeking excitement? Adventure? Culture?

Rossland may be a small city, but it’s pretty big on activities.

Set on an ancient volcanic valley deep in the Monashee Mountains, Rossland is an outdoor adventure mecca for fans of skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, cat-skiing, golfing, fishing, snowshoeing and more.

And, the quaint downtown of Rossland gives you a chance to leave the big box stores behind and poke through a number of boutique shops selling everything from clothes, shoes, skis and kitchen ware such as the Butch Boutry Ski Shop, Revolution Cycles & Service, Rossvegas Board Shop and Bear Country Kitchen.

Red Mountain Resort is located 2 km from Rossland and offers a 2,919 foot (884 m) vertical drop and over 300 inches (750 cm) of annual snowfall. With accolades ranging from ‘Best Authentic and Funky Resort Experience’ to ‘Best Powder, Best Trees, Best Steps’, to ‘Best Fall Line Steeps’ and one of the ‘Top 5 Freeride Spots’, Red Mountain Resort is the hidden jewel of BC’s Kootenay Rockies Powder Highway region.

Voted ‘Canada’s #1 Outdoor Town’ in 2007 by Canadian outdoor magazine Explore, Rossland’s stunning landscape and epic mountain trails have also made it renowned as being one of Canada’s top mountain biking spots – no small feat in a country covered in mountains and trails! Trails range from family friendly cross-country to steep, technical single track. The International Mountain Biking Association’s ‘Epic Ride’, the The Seven Summits, traverses more than 30 km (18 mi) across stunning peaks.

More Mountain Biking
With a deep history of biking on old railway beds, miner’s trails and whiskey running routes, Rossland is one of the founding bike destinations in BC and is also known as the Mountain Bike Capital of Canada. Rossland has a full-time, paid trails crew that maintains and labels the huge myriad of trails. The cross-country trails are renowned for being phenomenal – but there is also plenty of free-ride and downhill trails for enthusiasts.

Road Biking
The roads surrounding Rossland serve up miles and miles of two-wheeled bliss for roadies who are ready to test their legs in the mountains and river valleys. Sparse traffic, good roads and brilliant scenery are always par for the course.

Hiking / Trail Running
There are plenty of leisurely and peaceful strolls for the casual day hiker. For more experienced adventurers who crave a challenge under often sunny skies, Rossland has plenty of demanding scrambles and breathtaking views. For trail running enthusiasts, they can take advantage of the big mountain terrain and expert trail maintenance or participate in one of the many planned events.

Cross-country Skiing
Sitting high in the Monashee Mountains, Rossland is home to a vast network of cross-country skiing trails, many of which are maintained by the Kootenay Columbia Trail Society. In the winter, the stunning and varied terrain around Rossland provides endless xc skiing opportunities for novices and experts. The snow comes early and stays late, so the ski-season is long and the views endless. If track skiing is more your thing, Black Jack Ski Club is known well amongst cross-country ski enthusiasts for its well-groomed classic and skate skiing trails located just across from Red Mountain Resort.

Cat-skiing
There are several tour operators surrounding Rossland which offer cat-skiing tours. Big Red Cats depart directly from Red Mountain Resort to access nearby peaks.

Festivals and Events
There are a variety of festivals and events each year, all seasons. The most notable is the Rossland Winter Carnival, the longest running winter carnival in Canada. The January weekend offers snow lovers, all sorts of ways to celebrate and slide from live music, an outdoor ice bar, bobsled races, snow volleyball and more.

Golf & Disc Golf
Rossland’s original golf course is Redstone Resort, which SCOREGolf named one of the Best New Courses in Canada for 2010. Course designer, Les Furber, a top Canadian golf architect, has taken a rugged, mountainous site and created an exceptional mountain golf experience.  Fancy a different type of golf? Give disc golf a try. An 18-basket course is located at the Black Jack Nordic Centre.

Historical and Cultural Activities
Rossland has a long history as a gold mining town turned into a modern outdoor destination. The Rossland Museum and Visitor Centre offers visitors a chance to learn about the mining and skiing and even try their hand panning for gold. The Gold Fever Follies is a family-friendly musical theatre performance that runs twice daily throughout the summer.  Many of the historical buildings from the mining rush still stand in Rossland, and the heritage walking tour gives you a chance to see and learn more about then at your own pace.
