An outdoor experiential company located on 600+ acres of pristine mountainside wilderness in the Columbia Valley.
They cater primarily to mature adults who are looking to gain confidence in the outdoors while expanding their skill levels. Back 40 Outdoor Events’ motto is ‘You Belong Here’ and this ethos is woven into the fabric of their programs and hospitality design.
With the exception of the Hike ‘n Sleep Program, all programs are 3 days + 3 nights and are based at Highland Bear, a privately-owned property on Brisco Mountain.
Programs include accommodation (canvas tents, cots and sleeping pads), meals, program instruction and guides. (SUP program also includes paddleboard, PFDs, return transportation for paddling excursion.)
Introductory level to get you on your hiking boots and out on the trails. Topics include trip planning, essential equipment and navigation. The opportunity is to practice your skills on entry-level day hikes and depending on group ability and preference, option for more challenging hikes.
The basics of backpacking, building on basic hiking skills. Learn the skills and get a chance to practice your knowledge before heading into the nearby mountains for an overnight trip.
Hike and SUP
The best of two worlds – introductory level hiking in the Rockies combined with introductory stand-up paddleboarding on the Columbia River. The program begins at Highland Bear, then relocate to Lake Windermere before enjoying a peaceful paddle on Columbia River through the Columbia Wetlands.
