This is coal country and tours of several local mines are offered throughout the summer in Sparwood and Elkford.
Teck operates five coal mines in the Elk Valley. The operations straddle a rich coal belt in the southeastern corner of British Columbia.
Elkford offers tours of Fording River (July) and Greenhills Operations (August) open pit mines. These tours are offered on Saturdays during the summer and originate from the Elkford Visitor Centre at 10:30am: 1-855-877-9453 VisitorCentre@Elkford.ca
In July and August, Open Pit Mine Tours of Elkview Operations depart three times per week from the Sparwood Visitor Centre: 1-877-485-8185

Sparwood is home to one of the world’s largest tandem axle dump trucks, the Terex Titan weighing 260 tons. It could carry 350 tons during its operation in one the area’s coal mines. Check out the photo at the link in the right column.
