KINBASKET LAKE

The Columbia River undergoes significant changes as it flows northwest toward past Golden/Donald. The construction of the Mica Dam has resulted in a larger formation of Kinbasket Lake, a substantial reservoir that has dramatically widened the river. Upstream of the dam, the river features a combination of rapids and tranquil sections. Beyond the Dam, the river’s channel becomes more defined, though it continues to be shaped by hydroelectric reservoirs.

The Big Bend Highway (Highway 23) was a 314-km gravel route tracing the Columbia River’s northern curve between Golden and Revelstoke. Its operational period was relatively brief, as it was superseded in 1962 by the Trans-Canada Highway through Rogers Pass, offering a shorter, safer, and all-season alternative.
